What to Expect on Your First Driving Lesson
Starting your driving lessons is an exciting milestone — but the first one can feel a bit nerve-wracking if you don’t know what to expect. Don’t worry! At 10 to 2 Driving School, we’re here to make things clear, calm and confidence-building from the very first session.
What Happens on Your First Driving Lesson?
In your first lesson, we’ll typically drive you to a quiet location where you’ll begin learning the basics. You won’t be thrown into busy traffic — instead, we’ll start with the essentials, step-by-step:
- Introduction to the car and controls
- How to adjust your seat, mirrors and steering position
- The cockpit drill (your first essential routine)
- How to move off and stop using key safety routines
The Cockpit Drill: Setting Yourself Up
Before you can drive, you need to be in a safe and comfortable position. This is where the cockpit checks come in:
- Doors: Make sure all doors are properly closed.
- Seat: Adjust for comfort and control — your feet should reach the pedals fully.
- Steering: Adjust the wheel if needed so you have a firm but relaxed grip.
- Seatbelt: Always buckle up.
- Mirrors: Adjust both interior and exterior mirrors for clear visibility.
We remember this with the acronym DSSSM — Doors, Seat, Steering, Seatbelt, Mirrors.
Moving Off: Using the POM Routine
Once you’re set up, you’ll learn to move off safely using the POM routine:
- Prepare: Clutch down, select 1st gear, set the gas, and find the biting point.
- Observe: Use all mirrors, check blind spots, and make sure it’s safe.
- Move: Release the handbrake and gently accelerate.
We’ll guide you through this at a slow, controlled pace until it becomes second nature.
Stopping Safely: MSM Routine
To stop safely, we teach the MSM routine:
- Mirrors: Check interior, then side mirrors to assess traffic.
- Signal: Indicate your intention clearly, if needed.
- Manoeuvre: Slow down smoothly and steer to a safe stopping position.
Stopping and starting is one of the first things you’ll practise repeatedly — so don’t worry if it takes a few tries to get the feel of it!
