What’s Included in the Practical Driving Test?
The test lasts around 40 minutes and includes:
- Eyesight check – Reading a number plate from 20 metres
- ‘Show me, tell me’ questions – Basic vehicle safety checks
- General driving – Varied road types and conditions
- One manoeuvre – Such as bay park, parallel park, or pulling up on the right
- Independent driving – Following a sat nav or traffic signs for about 20 minutes
You can make up to 15 driver faults and still pass — but no serious or dangerous faults.
How to Prepare for the Practical Test
- Book a mock test with your instructor
- Get comfortable driving independently (e.g., with minimal instruction)
- Practise your manoeuvres regularly
- Work on staying calm in roundabouts, busy traffic, and junctions
- Review “show me, tell me” questions in advance
